Scales

HPC Scale Packet

Objective:
The purpose of the studying scales and arpeggios is to improve intonation and tone by learning patterns, and technique required in different keys across the range of the instrument. To introduce new scales and arpeggios, complete the following steps:

Sequence of Learning

  1. Set your tuner to drone the tonic note of the key.
  2. Slowly play a one-octave scale and arpeggio without a pulse, listening and adjusting fingertips to finely tune each pitch before moving to the next note.
  3. Then add a pulse and learn half notes, quarter notes, and then the printed rhythm, and finally add slurs.
  4. Perform scale with and without a metronome: begin with a slow tempo and increase as mastery improves.
  5. Next, more advanced players can move on to the two-octave and three-octave scale: one-octave students stay on the one-octave scale
